El Mundial de básquetbol de España-2014 tendrá seis sedes (Bilbao, Granada, Sevilla, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Barcelona y Madrid) y la final tendrá lugar en la capital del país, anunció este jueves el presidente de la Federación Española de Baloncesto (FEB), José Luis Saez.
España, vigente campeona de Europa y plata en los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín-2008, espera que este torneo sirva para reeditar su mayor éxito hasta el momento, el título que su equipo 'ÑBA' consiguió en el Mundial de Japón-2006, con Pau Gasol como gran estrella, a pesar de perderse la final por lesión.
El Mundial de básquet se disputará por segunda vez en España, después de la experiencia de 1986, y con la edición de 2014 los organizadores esperan "hacer un gran Mundial de baloncesto y hacer que el foco del mundo del baloncesto sea en 2014 sobre España", según Saez.
El presidente de la Federación Internacional de este deporte (FIBA), el francés Yvan Mainini, declaró por su parte a la AFP que no tenía "ninguna duda" de que España iba a "dar a este evento una gran organización".
El máximo dirigente de la FIBA apuntó a Estados Unidos, defensor del título conseguido en Turquía en 2010, como favorito, ya que son "casi imbatibles cuando deciden poner los medios para ello", aunque prefirió no descartar a otros aspirantes, "que están progresando mucho".
